Materials

  • Thin craft wire or copper wire, 20 to 26 gauge, easy to bend
  • Small jar or glass container, clear so you can watch growth
  • Baking soda, the key crystal-forming ingredient
  • Hot water, just off the boil for better dissolving
  • Clear tape or a small cork to center the tree in the jar (optional)
  • Food coloring, small bottles of gentle hues
  • Pliers and wire cutters, safe and simple to use
  • Small pebbles or a clay base to hold the trunk steady
  • A tray or towel to catch drips while the jar grows crystals
  • Gloves, optional, for hands that prefer a dry touch

Instructions

  • Prepare your space.Lay down a towel or tray to catch spills.Arrange tools and jars so everything feels easy to reach.
  • Make the tree skeleton.Cut several lengths of wire, each about 6 to 8 inches long.Twist them together at one end to form a trunk, then fan the upper ends into branches.
  • Shape the branches.Bend the branch tips gently into small curves or loops.Create a balance so the tree stands upright when placed on a small base.
  • Secure the trunk.Press the twisted trunk into a small mound of clay or around some pebbles.Make sure it sits centered and steady in the jar mouth.
  • Heat the water.Boil fresh water and let it cool for a minute so it stays hot but not scalding.Use about 1 cup per jar for a small tree.
  • Dissolve the baking soda.Add 3 to 4 tablespoons of baking soda to the hot water.Stir slowly until most grains dissolve. The solution will get cloudy; that is okay.
  • Tint the solution.Drop 1 to 3 drops of food coloring into the solution.Stir once or twice to swirl the colour gently. Use subtle amounts for a soft rainbow.
  • Position the tree in the jar.Center the trunk so branches do not touch the glass sides. If the jar neck is wide, tape the trunk to a small stick laid across the jar mouth to keep it centered.
  • Pour the solution.Slowly pour the warm solution into the jar until the base covers the tree trunk.Go steady to avoid splashing color on the branches.
  • Find a calm spot.Place the jar in a quiet, still area away from direct sunlight and drafts.Crystals prefer gentle, even conditions while they grow.
  • Watch and wait.Check after 1 hour and then in two hour blocks. You will notice tiny crystals forming first at rough spots and branch joins.
  • Add more color or solution if needed. If growth slows, gently warm and add a little more solution to the jar.You can very lightly dip a branch in a different colored solution to create small color accents.
  • Harvest the tree. When you like the look, lift the tree from the jar and let it dry upright on a tray.Handle slowly. Fresh crystals remain delicate until fully dry.
  • Finish and display.Trim any stray wires and set the tree on a small base or in a shallow dish.Enjoy the sparkle under soft light or near a small lamp.
