Materials

  • 1/4 cup of cornstarch (easy to find in most grocery stores)
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 1 tablespoon of white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon of glycerin (you can find it at pharmacies)
  • Pink food coloring (choose your shade)
  • A mixing bowl
  • A pot for heating
  • Baking parchment or a silicone mat for drying
  • Cookie cutters or molds for shaping

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the cornstarch, water, white vinegar, and glycerin. Feel the texture as it begins to blend, smooth and soft.
  • Stir gently until everything is well mixed. Notice how the consistency changes, becoming a bit glossy and ready to be heated.
  • Pour the mixture into a small pot over medium heat. As you heat it, watch for the transformation—it thickens beautifully. Stir constantly to prevent it from sticking.
  • After a few minutes, the mixture will begin to form a soft, pliable ball. When it’s difficult to stir, remove it from the heat.
  • Once the mixture cools slightly, knead it with your hands until it becomes smoother. Add a few drops of pink food coloring to achieve your desired shade. Kneading also distributes the color evenly.
  • Roll out the bioplastic on a piece of baking parchment or a silicone mat. Use cookie cutters or molds to create shapes. Enjoy the feel of the soft dough under your hands.
  • Once shaped, allow the suncatchers to dry completely. This may take several hours, but you can enjoy the calming scent of warm materials in the air as they set.
  • Once dry, hang your suncatchers by a window. As the daylight filters through, notice the gentle play of colors on your walls.
