  • 1 clear jar or shallow dish Clear jar or shallow dish For observing the experiment.
  • 1 cup Water (preferably room temperature) Use room temperature water for better mixing.
  • 1 cup Vegetable oil (or any clear oil) Alternative oils can also be used.
  • assorted drops Food coloring Variety of colors for a vibrant experience.
  • 1 spoon or dropper A spoon or dropper For adding the food coloring.
  • optional Glitter or small beads For added fun and sensory experience.

Preparation

  • Begin by filling your jar or shallow dish about halfway with water. Observe how the water sits still, reflecting light and surroundings.
  • Slowly pour oil into the water until the jar is nearly full, watching as the oil floats and creates a lovely layer above the water.
  • Using a dropper or the spoon, add drops of food coloring to the surface of the oil. Experience the anticipation as the colors spread and create spectacular shapes.
  • Gently stir with a spoon, watching the colors marbled beautifully between the oil and water, dancing and playing with each other.
  • Allow the layers to settle and observe how the colors separate, reminding you of how different elements interact in nature.
