Materials
- Granulated sugar (easy to find; forms the sweet base)
- Light corn syrup (adds chewiness and prevents crystallization)
- Water (small amount to dissolve sugar)
- Gum base or natural chicle (available online or in specialty stores; essential for chew)
- Powdered sugar (for dusting and to finish pieces)
- Food-grade flavoring oil (mint, strawberry, or bubble gum flavor; optional)
- Food coloring (optional, a drop or two goes far)
- Small saucepan (use a heavy-bottom pan to heat evenly)
- Candy thermometer (helpful for precise temperatures, optional but recommended)
- Silicone mat or parchment paper (for cooling and shaping)
- Plastic wrap or airtight container (for storing finished gum)
- Wooden spoon or heatproof spatula (for stirring)
- Small cookie cutter or knife (for cutting shapes, optional)
Instructions
- Prepare your workspace and gentle tools. Keep a clean silicone mat or parchment ready. Line a small plate with powdered sugar for finishing.
- Combine sugar, corn syrup, and water in the pan. Stir gently until crystals dissolve. Heat slowly on medium-low so the mixture warms evenly.
- Bring the syrup to a low boil and watch its color. Use a thermometer if you have one, and aim for the soft-ball stage. The soft-ball stage feels syrupy and tender when dropped into cold water.
- Remove the pan from heat and let the syrup sit a moment. Cooling softens its edge and makes it easier to fold with gum base. Work with calm, steady movements so you do not splash or burn.
- Add the gum base in small pieces to the warm syrup. Stir and press until it blends and the mass pulls in long strands. If the base resists melting, return briefly to very low heat and stir.
- Once the mixture comes together, begin to knead gently. Use a spoon to fold it, then move to using lightly oiled hands. Feel the graininess fade and the texture smooth into a stretchy ball.
- Add flavor and color sparingly as you knead. A drop of flavor oil goes far; taste a tiny bit to test. Work slowly so the scent and color disperse evenly.
- Roll the gum into ribbons or a small log on your mat. Dust lightly with powdered sugar to prevent sticking. Cut into small pieces or use a cookie cutter for shapes.
- Let the pieces rest at room temperature for several hours. This step helps them firm slightly and develop chew. Store finished pieces in an airtight container with a small dusting of powdered sugar.
- Enjoy mindfully and share gently. Take a small piece, notice its temperature and soft give. Blow a slow bubble if you wish, or savor the flavor slowly.
