  • 6 pieces jumbo craft sticks
  • 1 cup Borax Essential for crystallization
  • 3 cups hot water Adult supervision recommended
  • 1 jar tall heat-safe jar
  • as needed rainbow food coloring For coloring the crystals
  • as needed pieces pipe cleaners To shape into pencil silhouettes
  • as needed pieces clear pink and clear blue beads For added decoration
  • as needed string For suspending the pencil shapes

Instructions

Preparation

  • Begin by bending pipe cleaners into oversized pencil silhouettes.
  • In a tall heat-safe jar, dissolve Borax in 3 cups of hot water, stirring until fully dissolved.
  • Divide the solution into several smaller jars and tint each with different colors.

Crystallization

  • Carefully suspend your pencil shapes in each colored solution, ensuring they are fully submerged.
  • Leave them in the jars overnight to allow crystals to form.

Finishing

  • After a day, carefully remove the pencils from the solutions and lay them out flat to dry.

If crystals appear rough, ensure the solution was saturated enough. For larger crystals, use more Borax and allow longer crystallization times.
