Materials

  • Crayons (red, pink, orange, and any other colors you enjoy)
  • Wax paper or parchment paper (easy to find in most kitchens)
  • An iron (safely managed with adult supervision)
  • Scissors
  • A heart-shaped template (optional)
  • A window with natural light for display

Instructions

  • Begin by preheating your iron to a low setting. The warmth will help the crayons melt gently.
  • While the iron warms, take a sheet of wax or parchment paper. If you're using a heart-shaped template, lay it carefully on one side of the paper.
  • Start peeling the crayons, revealing their beautiful colors. Let your imagination guide you as you select shades that speak to you.
  • Grate the crayons carefully using a cheese grater or peel them into tiny pieces. Listen to the soft sounds as they fall onto the paper.
  • Once you have a gentle pile of crayon pieces over the template, fold the paper over to cover them.
  • Place the paper, with the crayon pieces inside, between two layers of clean cloth or paper towels. This protects your iron and keeps it clean from any melted wax.
  • Slowly glide the warm iron over the cloth or towels. Notice how the scent of melting crayon fills the air. The colors will begin to blend and swirl into a beautiful mosaic.
  • Keep the iron moving to avoid burning the paper. After a few moments, lift the top layer to check the melting progress.
  • When you're happy with the blending, remove the iron and let the suncatcher cool. Allow it to rest on a flat surface.
  • Once cooled, use scissors to cut around your heart shape or cut out any desired patterns.
  • Prepare to hang your suncatcher. You can punch a hole at the top and use string or tape to display it beautifully in your window.
