Materials

  • 1 cup of baking soda (easy to find)
  • ½ cup of cornstarch
  • ½ cup of white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon of corn syrup
  • Food coloring in various colors (choose your favorites)
  • A mixing bowl
  • A whisk or spoon for stirring
  • A measuring cup
  • Silicone molds (optional, but they help create perfect spheres)
  • Glow-in-the-dark powder (optional for extra glowing effect)

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, combine one cup of baking soda and half a cup of cornstarch. Notice the fine grainy texture beneath your fingers.
  • In a separate bowl, mix half a cup of white vinegar with one tablespoon of corn syrup. As you stir, you'll hear quiet fizzing as the vinegar and baking soda begin to dance together.
  • Slowly pour the liquid mixture into the dry ingredients, stirring gently. Feel the mix transforming from solid to liquid as you whisk.
  • Divide the mixture into separate small bowls based on how many colors you’d like to create.
  • Add a few drops of food coloring to each bowl. Watch as the vibrant hues lift from the drops, blending with the mixture, bringing your vision to life.
  • If desired, incorporate glow-in-the-dark powder into a few of the mixtures for a magical twist.
  • Gently mold the mixtures into spheres, either by hand or using silicone molds. Enjoy the pliable texture between your fingers as you shape them.
  • Allow the bouncy balls to dry for 24 hours. The anticipation builds as you see your creations sit still, so close yet unbounced.
