- Begin by bending the pipe cleaners into whimsical butterfly shapes.
- In a clear container, combine 3 tablespoons of borax with 1 cup of hot water and stir until the borax dissolves completely.
- Add a few drops of food coloring to the solution to give your butterflies some color.
- Tie a piece of string to your shaped butterfly and attach the other end to a stick or pencil, ensuring the butterflies are submerged in the solution.
- Place the container in a quiet spot and let it sit undisturbed for several hours or overnight.
- After 6-12 hours, check if crystals have formed. They should feel hard and look shiny.
- Carefully remove the butterflies from the container, rinse them under cold water, and let them dry on a clean surface.
- Display your creations where they can capture light.

Tips & Notes:
Crystals may not form if the solution is too cool or if the pipe cleaners aren't fully submerged. If this happens, reheat the solution and add more borax as necessary. These decorations can also be made in different shapes or with added glitter for variation.
