Materials

  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour (easy to find)
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 cup of salt
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
  • optional: food coloring
  • optional: essential oils for scent

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt, creating a soft mountain of white.
  • In a separate bowl, mix together the water and vegetable oil before slowly pouring it into the dry ingredients.
  • Stir gently with a spoon until it starts to take form, feeling the texture change beneath your fingers.
  • Once combined, knead the mixture by hand on a floured surface. Feel the dough warm and soften with each press.
  • If using, add food coloring now, kneading until the color is evenly blended throughout.
  • When your dough is smooth and pliable, take a portion and flatten it into a disc about an inch thick.
  • Press your hand firmly into the center to create an imprint, feeling the coolness of the dough contrasted with the warmth of your skin.
  • Allow the handprint shapes to dry at room temperature for 48 hours or until firm.
