How Crystal Growing Works
Every project in this collection relies on the same idea. Hot water holds far more dissolved powder than cold water can. As the solution cools, the water can no longer keep it all dissolved, and the excess comes out of solution as solid crystals — building on whatever surface you have given it.
That is why the shape you suspend matters, and why the jar has to be left alone. Moving it disturbs the forming crystals and is the most common reason a batch disappoints.
Growing Crystals at Home Overnight
The fastest results come from suspending a pipe-cleaner or cardboard shape in a freshly made solution at bedtime. By morning it is coated. This is the version most children remember, and it is the one to start with.
Sugar crystals are the slow counterpart, taking days rather than hours, and rewarding patience with much larger individual crystals.
Crystal Science Projects for School
Because the method is consistent, these projects adapt well to a school investigation. Running two identical jars at different cooling speeds, or comparing salt against sugar against Epsom salts, produces a genuine comparison with a visible result — which is exactly what a science fair asks for.

Borax is a laundry and cleaning product. It is used here purely as a crystal-forming compound, it is not food and must never be tasted, and an adult should measure, mix and pour it while keeping the box out of reach. Follow the directions on the packaging, wash hands after handling, and use the borax-free methods in the book if you would rather not have it in the house at all. Finished crystals are decorations, not sweets — which matters most with the sugar versions, since those genuinely are edible and the others are not.
